How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Page numbers help readers cite and navigate reports, proposals, and scanned bundles. Add them directly to a copy of the PDF without changing the original pages.

Steps

  1. Open Add Page Numbers

Add the PDF you want to number.

  2. Choose a position

Select the top or bottom and the left, center, or right alignment.

  3. Set the number format

Choose the starting number and plain or “1 of 12” formatting.

  4. Download the numbered PDF

Apply the labels and download the new copy.

Pick a position that does not cover content

Use a bottom corner for most reports, or place numbers at the top when the footer contains existing notes. Check a page preview or the downloaded copy if the margins are tight.

A number such as “1 of 12” gives readers both their current position and the total length.

Set the starting number deliberately

Use the start value to match a larger document. For example, a chapter extracted from a report may need to begin at page 15.

The tool draws numbers onto the page, so leave enough margin in the source document for legibility.
