How to Remove a Password from a PDF You Own

If you know the password for a PDF you have the right to modify, you can create an unprotected copy for easier reading, editing, or archiving. The password is used locally and is not sent to a server.

Steps

  1. Open Unlock PDF

    Choose Unlock PDF and add the protected document.

  2. Enter the password

    Type the password you are authorized to use.

  3. Create the unprotected copy

    Run the tool to decrypt the document in your browser.

  4. Download and store it safely

    Download the unlocked copy and handle it as sensitive material.

You need the correct password

PDFmuto does not guess or bypass an unknown password. Enter the password supplied by the document owner or the one you set yourself.

If the file has permission restrictions rather than an opening password, test the resulting copy in your normal PDF reader before relying on it.

Protect the new copy

An unlocked PDF no longer has the original password barrier. Store it securely and delete it when you no longer need the unprotected version.

You can password-protect the document again with a new password after making your edits.
